Gotta love these

These tailcones really dress up a rocket but have other advantages too. Because the tailcone projects a few more inches aft, it helps prevent fin damage during hard landings. They also increase the altitude your rocket will fly on a given motor by up to 10% by reducing tail drag. Finally, they transfer a lot of acceleration energy to the airframe via the stepped periphery even better than a flanged motor retainer. I use one tailcone on many of my rockets. The only disadvantage other than a little extra tail weight is that your motor tube must be long enough to allow for the extra length required to fit the tailcone. If the kit you are considering has too short a motor tube, ask to see if you can get one with a couple extra inches to accommodate the tailcone.
